Obed Mine Cleanup

670M LSlurry released
Project
Obed Mountain Mine and the Athabasca River corridor, Alberta - among the largest containment failures of its type in Canadian history.
Problem
A containment wall failed on 31 October 2013 and roughly 670 million litres of slurry entered Apetowun and Plante Creeks and the Athabasca River, with elevated metals and PAHs reported downstream.
Solution
Gel Flocculant blocks and treated fabric were installed in situ across rivers, streams and engineered catchment basins as part of the mine disaster relief team.
Results
Runoff settled in primary cells upstream of the Athabasca; clarified water moved to polishing cells where ultra-fines were captured on treated natural fabric. Clearflow chemistry was used exclusively in the multi-party cleanup and still supports site remediation.

Municipal

Cloverbar Ravine

<8 NTUAt release
Project
Cloverbar Ravine into the North Saskatchewan River, Edmonton - the drinking-water corridor for roughly one million people.
Problem
About 8,200 m3/day of highly turbid water carrying sediment, metals and hydrocarbons discharged into a fish-bearing stream, with visible algae and ecological stress.
Solution
Gel Flocculant blocks set in-stream about 150 m upstream of treated geo-jute, with roughly 100 m of matting lining the stream to collect sediment.
Results
End-of-pipe clarity reported at under 8 NTU. Third-party Golder Engineering comparisons (29 June 2007) recorded 79% TSS, 96% ammonia nitrogen and 88% zinc reductions.

Mining

Mary River Iron Mine

ArcticSensitivity class
Project
Mary River, Baffin Island, Nunavut - one of the world's most northerly high-grade iron ore operations, near the Arctic Circle.
Problem
Surface-water treatment and erosion and sediment control had to hold up in an environmentally sensitive Arctic setting where a release carries outsized consequences.
Solution
Clearflow was selected in 2015 over competing suppliers to provide Gel Flocculant surface-water treatment and erosion-control products and services across mine and port development areas.
Results
Passive treatment was applied across the development with Clearflow continuing to support ongoing work focused on protecting Arctic aquatic habitat.

Construction

Aggregate Wash Plant

33,120 m3Recycled per day
Project
Aggregate wash plant, Canada - process water recycled at volume rather than discharged.
Problem
The plant needed to recycle process water at high volume while meeting release guidelines and avoiding a costly shutdown.
Solution
Gel Flocculant installed directly in the recycle and clarification path.
Results
Downstream turbidity came back cleaner than the upstream river source water the plant draws from. Up to about $120,000 in avoided shutdown cost, lower long-term maintenance, and release that surpassed the project's regulatory guidelines.

Municipal

Waterloo Storm Pond 53

$1.3MRetrofit awarded
Project
Storm Pond 53, Waterloo, Ontario - about 3,000 m3 of accumulated sediment at design capacity.
Problem
The pond needed dewatering and sediment removal without conventional high-cost slurry handling, and the city wanted the material reused rather than landfilled.
Solution
Gel Flocculant reactor and blocks clarified the dewatering stream into a treated geo-jute ditch, while Ultrabind solidified the sediment slurry at roughly 1 kg per cubic metre for handling and reuse.
Results
In 2018 Waterloo awarded an approximately $1.3 million storm-pond retrofit, with about 300 m3 diverted from landfill onto municipal boulevards. Peterborough and Innisfil awarded follow-on retrofits from 2019.
