OBED MINE CLEANUP

Clearflow Gel Flocculant supported the Obed Mountain Mine spill response—an estimated 670 million litres of slurry—with passive in-situ treatment upstream of the Athabasca River.

The Challenge:

On 31 October 2013 a containment wall failed at the Obed Mountain Mine. An estimated 670 million litres of slurry entered Apetowun and Plante Creeks and the Athabasca River—among the largest incidents of its type in Canadian history. Downstream monitoring reported elevated metals and PAHs.

The Solution:

Clearflow Gel Flocculant blocks and treated fabric were installed in situ in rivers, streams, and engineered catchment basins as part of the mine disaster relief team, working alongside Indigenous youth and workers from the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, Clean Harbours, Matrix Solutions, and Sherritt Coal International.

Runoff contacted Gel Flocculant for rapid TSS settling in primary cells upstream of the Athabasca; clarified water moved to polishing cells where ultra-fines were captured on treated natural fabric. Clearflow chemistry was used exclusively as part of the multi-party cleanup and ongoing remediation support. Historical results are examples, not guarantees.
